Fargo is a Gem

 8.25.2023

Jamestown, ND

Mileage: 2290

While Kenny worked I went to Moorhead, MN to the Hjemkomst Center to see two Norwegian, wooden replicas.   Moorhead and Fargo are really one city on either side of the Red River. I saw a wooden ship and a Stave Church.  Both were very interesting and have great stories.

This Viking ship replica was built by a school counselor in the 70's and early 80's.  Unfortunately, he did not live to see its completion.  His family and the foundation he created did complete the boat, and it actually sailed to Norway to great fanfare.  If you are interested in the whole story you can find a video on it here: Hjemkomst.

The Hopperstad Stave Church replicates a church built in Vik, Norway .

There's a video on this one also.  It can be found here:  Hopperstad Stave Church.

It was painstakingly rebuilt by volunteers to the specs of the original church.  It was interesting to walk through the church.

We walked through the raised entry door.

The Christmas Story is painted inside.

This small window is a Leper's Window.  Those with the disease would stand outside to hear services.

Outside of Leper's Window.

Downtown Fargo has a great main street with several blocks of shops, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants.  I enjoyed walking the street and looking for murals.  I had lunch at Berrnbaum's Jewish Deli and had a terrific Turkey Pastrami Sandwich.

Kenny then joined me to tour the Fargo Air Museum where we stayed last night.  It is a small museum which has several interesting aircraft.

We were then off to Jamestown, ND.  I spent the rest of the afternoon doing laundry and cooking dinner.  The weather here is finally cooling down.  The high today was 82 tonight is supposed to get into the low 60's.  I'm excited we can sleep with the windows open with no generator or AC.  Tomorrow we drive to Medora, ND.
