Crazy Horse Memorial, One More Drive through Needles, Mt. Rushmore at Night, and One Month on the Road

Mileage: We move tomorrow!

One Month on the Road

Before I get in to today's blog I want to pause and acknowledge that yesterday marked one month on the road.  What an amazing commodity time is!  Having the time to go slow has allowed us to see and do so many things.  During a regular vacation, while working, we had the time and energy to go one place.  Time has allowed us to plan and see so many things thus far.  This also would be a very different experience without an RV.  Each morning we wake-up in our own bed, make breakfast in our own kitchen, and eat at our own table because we drive our house with us.  It is a great way to see things that we probably would never have seen.  We likely would never have traversed Minnesota on back roads had we not been chasing Laura.  RVing and time allow us to wander with a purpose.

Hot Water!

I mentioned several blogs ago that we had no hot water.  UPS finally delivered the package that contained our replacement part!  We installed it last night and the water heater works again.  We now have several spares just in case it happens again.  Hopefully, we won't be on too many more dirt roads!

It is amazing that such a little piece can cause such a problem.

Crazy Horse Memorial

We had a couple more things we wanted to see while in the Rapid City area.  So, we headed back up the mountain.  The Crazy Horse Memorial is still very much a work in progress.  It is amazing to see the progress made thus far!  The vision of Henry Standing Bear and the amazing dedication of many generations of the Ziolkowski family have created an impressive memorial to all Native People.

There is much more to the mountain than just the carving.  There are multiple museums dedicated to the sculptor and Native people.

We enjoyed a presentation and performance of a Hoop Dance by Star Chief Eagle.  She shared about the different formations of the hoops and then put them all together as one dance that tells her story.

One More Visit to Custer State Park

After dinner in Hill City we took off towards Mt. Rushmore.  Since we had time we decided to drive The Needles once more.  We drove the opposite way we did earlier in the week.  Gotta say it was a bit scarier being on the edge of the mountain.  The evening lighting made it beautiful!  As we were leaving the drive we saw one more bison in Custer State Park.

Mount Rushmore Lighting Ceremony

The Mount Rushmore Lighting Ceremony was beautiful and very moving.  It was definitely worth the drive.

Our boy was happy to see us when we got home, but I forgot to take a picture!
