Devil's Tower National Monument

What an amazing and beautiful place.  When you first see Devil's Tower from the road you quickly realize what a huge formation it is rising out of the prairie.  Many of you probably remember the tower from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  While there is still debate on how it formed if you follow the link above it will tell you how the US Park Service believes it formed.  Because of the size of the RV we parked it down low and only took the truck up to the base of the tower.  We were glad we did as we got these cool shots.

Once we got to the parking lot I got my stamp in my National Park Passport and we started off on the 1.6 mile hike around the base.

Even the base is at a good elevation to see the surrounding landscape.

There were several groups of climbers on the formation.  Their skill and courage are astounding.  We watched as little specks ascended up crevices in the rock.

We were also glad we heeded the warning to get there early as there were many cars waiting in line to go up the mountain as we were coming down.  As we drove away I took a few more shots from a distance.

Big Lost Meadery in the town of Gillette, Wyoming is our home for tonight.  We enjoyed a mead flight then went back later for dinner at the sister restaurant next door.

Comet was excited to be back on the road today.
