Bike Riding the Middle Keys

 2.7.2024

Big Pine Key Resort

Big Pine Key

Kenny and I both enjoy our electric bikes.  Today we rode about 12 miles along trails on Sugarloaf and Cudjoe Keys.  On recommendation from a volunteer at The Key Deer Wildlife Refuge we started at a wildlife refuge on Sugarloaf Key.  This trail is at the end of the old route 4A.  There are some remnants of asphalt along the trail, but largely Mother Nature has reclaimed this road.  It was very narrow, really more of a walking trail than a bike trail.  We went about a mile hoping it would open up a bit, alas that never happened.

The water was very close on both sides of the trail.

On our way back out we stopped at a small park along the road.  This pelican was just hanging out on this large piece of driftwood.

Both of these pictures look like clear blue sky.  However, in both there is a blimp that contains radar equipment used by the military for security surveillance purposes.  It also contains weather equipment.  In March of this year it will no longer be used.

We rode across a bridge where folks were fishing.  Look closely to see all of the fishing line wrapped around the power lines.

Our second stop was on Cudjoe Key.  While getting to this stretch of trail required crossing A1A it was worth the effort.  This stretch was about 5 miles of paved path with water along most of one side and foliage along the other.  We rode until the path went back into the rode then turned around to get back to the truck.

While we rode Comet held down the RV on his favorite perch.  Notice his new spiffy haircut!
