Biscayne National Park

 2.1.2024

We stayed the night at a Harvest Host location, New Life Church.  The sunrise was gorgeous.  We stayed here last year also as it is the perfect place to drive into the Keys.  Before we started down A1A we stopped Biscayne National Park (#21).

We took The Heritage of Biscayne Boat Tour as this National Park is 95% water.  Before the tour we walked around the visitor's center.  There is a beautiful boardwalk that goes around the center and then out onto a jetty.

The morning was chilly and the water a bit choppy once we got out to the open bay.

Our first stop was

Across the Bay we went in to Caesar's Creek.  There we learned about Sir Lancelot Jones who was the last landowner of three islands that are now part of the park.  Without him this National Park would have been much smaller as these top keys would have been lost to development.

Our second stop was Boca Chita Key.  This island has an interesting history as it was owned by Mark Honeywell, yup the guy whose name is probably on the thermostat in your house.  He loved to throw parties on this island.  He built the lighthouse to let his friends in Miami, which is just across the bay, when they should come over.  Understandably the Coast Guard had issue with this use of a lighthouse so they shut it down.  So, the resourceful Honeywell, installed a cannon which he could fire.

We walked along the nature trail and came upon this Great Blue Heron.

As we walked we saw many natural Sea Sponges.

Look closely.  There is a Yellow Bellied Warbler in this picture.

The natural coral beach was amazingly white and really set off the blue of the water.

Cool palm tree with a big bend in the trunk.

The skyline of Miami is across the water in this picture.

We enjoyed our visit to this beautiful park.
