WP Franklin

2.19.2024

Today we said goodbye to the Everglades.  Along our way we stopped in the town of Clewiston which is along the southern end of Lake Okeechobee.  The lake used to flow freely into the Everglades but was dammed years ago to create farm land.  These pictures were taken from part of the dam.  The water in the foreground is an access canal.  The water beyond the island is the actual lake.

We drove northwest to a campground we visited last year, WP Franklin North.  It is a sister to Ortona South which we stayed in a few weeks ago. This also is on a lock, although unlike Ortona, you cannot access the lock from the campground.  The lock is also along the Caloosahatchee River as it drains the lake to the Gulf of Mexico thus diverting the water that should go into the Everglades into the Gulf.  The government is working to undo much of the diversion of the water.  The natural flow of water through the Everglades goes through the natural limestone and feeds an underground aquifer the supplies fresh water to the greater Miami area and all of the Florida Keys.

There is a fishing pier in the river so I got to take some cool shots our our girl, Connie (the RV).

Such a beautiful sunset.
